Google is gradually rolling out an Android feature that automatically copies selected photos and videos to a Windows computer. The transfer uses Quick Share and stores files locally, avoiding internet data use and the need for additional cloud storage.

The option, labelled automatic backup in Quick Share preferences, has been identified in Google Play Services version 26.43. Unlike the existing process, which requires users to select files and approve transfers, the new feature can work in the background when a phone detects an authorized computer.

Setup begins in the Quick Share app for Windows. Both devices must be nearby, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and be signed in to the same Google account. Once connected, the phone can transfer recent content to the computer’s local drive.

The feature is rolling out gradually worldwide. Analysis of the software reportedly points to Samsung phones and laptops being excluded from this specific mechanism, potentially because Samsung has its own integration with Windows. The report lists OPPO, Honor, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus and Pixel devices among the brands expected to support it.
