Apple's new Apple TV 4K arrives on November 13 priced at $299, and it ships with an A19 chip, an improved Siri Remote and hands-free Siri controls. What it does not ship with is any commitment from Apple about how many years of software updates buyers can expect. Apple does not guarantee how long tvOS updates or support will last for its streaming boxes.

The company's track record is the best available guide. Older Apple TVs have received major software updates for eight to 10 years, with security patches continuing beyond that. The Apple TV HD launched in 2015 and the first Apple TV 4K in 2017, and both were updated to tvOS 26 in 2025. Security patches were still being provided in tvOS 26.6 in July 2026, amounting to roughly a decade of major updates for the HD model and eight years for the original 4K, plus security support.

That streak ended in September 2026 with tvOS 27. Apple's compatibility list for the new release begins with the second-generation Apple TV 4K from 2021, leaving the 2015 and 2017 models unable to install the latest operating system. Apple has not confirmed whether those older boxes will receive further security patches, and it has not estimated how many years of tvOS updates the new model will get.

By comparison, Amazon promises at least four years of security updates for Fire TV devices bought new directly from the company, or through the model's published support date if that is later. That is not the same as a major OS upgrade, but it gives Fire TV customers a minimum support deadline in writing.

Losing access to the latest tvOS does not turn an Apple TV into a brick. Netflix still supports the Apple TV HD and the first-generation Apple TV 4K even though neither qualifies for tvOS 27, though that could change as developers raise minimum software requirements and older devices lose the ability to install or update certain apps. A more practical approach is to judge the device on performance rather than age: an upgrade makes more sense when menus become painfully slow, apps start crashing or a service you rely on stops working. Security matters too, particularly if the Apple TV serves as a smart home hub and no longer receives patches.

The $299 price makes upgrading a harder decision. Apple's Siri AI beta will also be available on the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer, provided the Home admin has an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, so the latest hardware is not required for Siri AI. The 2026 model does bring meaningful improvements over the 2022 version, including the faster A19 processor and built-in microphones for hands-free control. Owners who lose or break a Siri Remote can use an iPhone as a remote instead of replacing the whole setup; the latest Siri Remote works with all Apple TV 4K models and even the 2015 Apple TV HD, and a replacement costs $59.
