Apple has updated its compact iPad with an OLED screen and an A20 Pro processor. The new model also brings a larger display, faster charging and refreshed connectivity, while its design remains broadly unchanged. In Portugal, prices start at €769.
The OLED panel replaces the previous LCD and measures 8.5 inches, up from the earlier model’s size, with bezels that are 24% thinner. Resolution remains similar, while peak HDR brightness rises from 500 to 1,200 nits. The screen still has a 60Hz refresh rate and does not support ProMotion. Apple hardware engineering vice president Dave Pakula said OLED’s faster pixel response contributes to a fluid viewing experience.
The iPad mini is powered by the A20 Pro, built on a 2nm process, with a five-core GPU and up to 12GB of RAM. Apple says graphics performance is up to 2.7 times higher and AI tasks up to 4.5 times faster than on the A17 Pro. The 512GB version also includes an extra CPU core and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. All configurations support Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.
Apple says battery life remains unchanged, but compatible charging equipment can take the tablet to 50% in 30 minutes. The device is 5.4mm thick and weighs 255g. It is also the first iPad with an IP67 water-resistance rating, enabled by an Acoustic Display system that replaces speaker grilles with tweeters between the glass and aluminium, alongside woofers that send sound through the screen.
Connectivity gains include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Apple’s C2 cellular modem, which the company says enables data speeds up to 50% faster. The front camera has moved to the long edge for landscape video calls. Colour choices are Midnight and Starlight.
The base price in Portugal is €769. The top configuration, with 512GB of storage, cellular connectivity and nano-texture glass, costs €1,449.
