Apple TV has launched Noturno, a thriller inspired by the crime novels Lázaro and The Sandman, written by the Swedish duo known as Lars Kepler. The series debuted with its first two episodes and adds another suspense production to the platform’s lineup.
The cast includes Stephen Graham as serial killer Jurek Walter, alongside Liev Schreiber, Zazie Beetz and Poorna Jagannathan. Graham’s performance has drawn comparisons with Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, particularly for its disturbing and unsettling qualities.
The story follows Jonah Lynn, played by Schreiber, a former soldier who became a homicide detective. Tired of the violence in Philadelphia, Jonah moves with his family to a small town in Pennsylvania in search of a quieter life.
That plan changes when Jurek Walter begins terrorizing the community and Jonah’s family. The detective is forced into a dangerous investigation as he tries to protect the people closest to him.
The case takes on a broader dimension when FBI agent Saga Bauer, played by Beetz and described as Jonah’s adopted daughter, joins the investigation. Her involvement brings her into direct confrontation with Jurek and increases the danger facing everyone involved.
Noturno has 10 episodes in total. Some reviews have noted that the series begins at a slower pace while it establishes the story, but critics have also praised its ability to hold viewers’ attention as the suspense develops.
New episodes are released on Apple TV every Friday.
