ChatGPT can now create animated GIFs from a text prompt or a photo uploaded to the chatbot. The feature is rolling out alongside OpenAI’s Images 2.6 update and includes controls for changing animation speed, editing individual frames and sharing the finished GIF.
Previously, ChatGPT could not generate a GIF natively in a single step. In an example shared by OpenAI, a user asks the chatbot to make a GIF of a dancing cat. ChatGPT produces the animation and lets the user change its playback speed or inspect it frame by frame.
OpenAI says Images 2.6 also makes image generation in ChatGPT faster. The company reports that users now generate more than 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT and its API, up from the 3 billion per week it reported in September.
Images 2.6 is rolling out to ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop and mobile apps. OpenAI is also releasing GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst through its API, with the company describing them as options for faster and higher-quality image generation.
