France’s national blood service, the Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), was affected by a cyberattack targeting refrigeration equipment supplied by Coolworld, according to the French government. The attackers reportedly struck the supplier’s systems rather than the EFS directly.

The incident involved changes to the refrigeration settings, raising temperatures in storage units from -30°C to 110°C. Unlike the supermarket freezers targeted in other reported attacks, these units held plasma samples intended for transfusions.

Authorities said the problem was contained in time and that no losses or consequences had been identified. Blood collection and distribution are continuing normally. France’s national cybersecurity agency and Ministry of Health are investigating.

It remains unclear whether artificial intelligence was used in the attack. The available information does not establish how the attackers accessed the refrigeration systems or what their motive was.
