The Dragon Ball Super manga is absent from the schedule for Jump Festa 2027, weakening hopes that the event will bring news of its return. The annual Shueisha event is scheduled for December 19 and 20 at Makuhari Messe near Tokyo, but the series appears neither on its promotional poster nor among the 34 titles receiving stage programs.
On November 2, Dragon Ball Super was also removed from Jump Original Art World, an exhibition of original illustrations held during the event. The Jump Festa website now lists Metaphor: ReFantazio, a manga adaptation of the Atlus video game published in V Jump since January 2025, in its place. No explanation was provided.
The manga began in V Jump in June 2015, with Toyotaro drawing the series and Akira Toriyama contributing to its story for much of its run. Its monthly publication stopped at chapter 103, released a few weeks after Toriyama died on March 1, 2024. The only subsequent installment has been chapter 104, a short story published in February 2025. The series currently spans 24 volumes.
Signs from Toyotaro had previously raised expectations of a possible continuation. On March 21, 2026, he changed his X biography to a phrase referring to doing everything for the series’ return. In August, he also told a young fan who asked him to draw more Dragon Ball Super, “Thank you. I understand,” in a response shared by V Jump’s official account.
Toyotaro has said that continuing without Toriyama was “not impossible.” In a mid-2025 interview, he also said he had already written a substantial portion of the manga’s recent chapters. Chapter 104, centered on Goten and Trunks, was the first short story he completed on his own.
Toriyama’s absence remains a major creative and editorial challenge. For nearly nine years, he supplied story outlines and feedback as Toyotaro worked on the manga. Neither Shueisha nor V Jump has announced a date for the series to resume.
The franchise continues in other forms: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a reworked version of the anime’s opening story, began airing in Japan on October 11. Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, which is set to adapt the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc, has no release date yet.
