Ecovias has begun installing a Free Flow toll system on the Imigrantes highway (SP-160) and expects it to start operating by December 14, the opening date of the summer operation. The electronic system is designed to charge drivers without requiring them to stop or slow down at toll booths.

During the transition, the total toll will remain R$40.60. Instead of being charged in one direction, it will be split into two R$20.30 payments: one on the descent toward the coast and another on the uphill journey. Ecovias had previously planned to launch the system on August 1, but postponed the rollout following instructions from the granting authority and Artesp.

The system uses cameras to read license plates and radio-frequency antennas above the lanes. Drivers with automatic toll tags will be charged through their accounts. Those without a tag will have up to 30 days to pay through Ecovias’ official channels, the Pedágio Digital portal or the CNH do Brasil app, using Pix or a credit card. A passage can take up to 48 hours to appear in the system.

Failure to pay within the legal deadline is classified as a serious toll-evasion violation and carries a R$195.23 fine and five points on the driver’s license. The existing concrete toll plazas will remain in place for traffic monitoring, according to information Ecovias provided to Uol Carros.
