A proposal to establish a new category of affordable electric cars made in the European Union is gaining support in Brussels. It aims to address two challenges facing the sector: declining competitiveness among European automakers and the high price of Electric vehicles.
The proposed cars would be simpler, smaller and less expensive than many models currently available. They would focus on urban travel and everyday journeys, without necessarily matching the size, power or equipment of larger electric vehicles.
The initiative is intended to give European manufacturers more scope to compete in the affordable electric-car segment, particularly against international rivals, including Chinese automakers. Producing lower-cost models could help manufacturers regain market share while strengthening Europe’s industrial supply chain.
The “Made in EU” aspect is central to the proposal. Encouraging vehicles to be produced and assembled in Europe could help preserve jobs, industrial capacity and technical expertise.
