Amazon Prime does not always have to cost the full standard membership price. Depending on your age, income, household situation, employment or existing services, you may qualify for free access or a discounted plan.
The simplest option is Amazon’s standard 30-day free trial. New eligible members receive Prime benefits during the trial, including fast shipping, selected discounts, improved Alexa features and Prime Video. Amazon requires a payment method and automatically starts a paid subscription when the trial ends unless it is canceled beforehand. Amazon does not guarantee that former subscribers will qualify for another trial, so recurring free access should not be assumed.
Young adults and students may qualify for Prime for Young Adults, which offers six months free. After the trial, the membership costs $7.49 per month or $69 per year. The program is available to adults aged 18 to 24 and higher-education students of any age, subject to proof of age or enrollment.
Customers receiving qualifying government assistance or meeting Amazon’s income requirements may be eligible for Prime Access. The plan includes the standard Prime benefits and costs $6.99 per month after a 30-day free trial. SNAP and Medicaid recipients are among those who may qualify, and some existing Prime members may be able to switch to the reduced plan.
Households can also avoid paying for two memberships. Amazon Family allows a paying Prime member to share selected benefits, including fast shipping, shopping deals and ad-supported Prime Video, with another adult at the same primary address. Both people keep separate Amazon accounts, but the organizer must share a payment method that the other adult can use. Amazon recommends checking payment, digital content and order-sharing settings before sending an invitation.
The household-sharing option does not extend Prime benefits to friends who live elsewhere. Amazon ended its Prime Invitee program in October 2025, removing the previous option to share free shipping outside the household. Free trial and Prime for Young Adults members also cannot share their benefits through Amazon Family.
Some workers and customers may already have Prime included in another benefit. Eligible US Amazon employees receive free Prime, and Whole Foods said its hourly workers will receive the same benefit beginning January 1, 2027. Metro by T-Mobile no longer offers Prime to new customers, but eligible legacy customers can retain the benefit, making it important to check an existing plan before changing carriers or service.
Navy Federal Visa Signature Flagship Rewards cardholders can receive a $139 statement credit toward an annual Prime membership when it is paid with the card. The card is no longer available to new applicants and has been replaced by the Flagship Premier card, which offers a $100 airline credit instead. The Flagship Rewards annual fee rises from $49 to $95 on November 2, 2026, reducing the potential net Prime savings to $44 before considering other card benefits. Navy Federal says the credit may take six to eight weeks to appear.
Other methods can reduce the cost rather than provide a direct membership benefit. Microsoft Rewards points can be exchanged for Amazon gift cards, which can then be used toward Prime. The Amazon Prime Visa offers five percent back on Amazon purchases for Prime members, while qualifying low-income customers enrolled in Spectrum’s Internet Assist plan can receive Amazon Prime at no additional cost.
