The feature was found by Android Authority while examining code in an update to Google’s app, but it is not currently available.
Family Link’s existing controls let parents either allow children to use the AI service without a time limit or block access entirely. The planned option would add the ability to set a maximum amount of use per day.
Once a child reaches the limit, Gemini would display a notification and a blocking screen showing when access becomes available again. The screen would also include a button to close the app. The code includes messages for cases where a parent changes the allowed time or turns off the limit. If Gemini cannot provide an exact time for access to resume, it would show a general notice that the assistant will be available again when the daily limit resets.
It is not clear whether the restriction would apply only to the Gemini app or also to other ways of accessing the AI, such as the system overlay and Google Messages integration. Android Authority reported that the messages found in the code are written from the child’s device perspective; it did not find the settings interface intended for parents.
The feature was identified in version 17.72.13.sa.arm64 of Google’s app during an APK teardown, a process that examines an Android installation file for references to features in development. Google has not provided a release timeline, and the discovery does not confirm that the feature will reach users; the company could still change or cancel it before an official update.
