Cleaning a PlayStation 5 occasionally can help prevent dust from restricting airflow and forcing the console to work harder to cool itself. However, the process should remain gentle: excessive force, unsuitable products or unnecessary disassembly can damage the system.
Before cleaning, shut down the PS5, disconnect its cables and allow it to cool completely. Place it on a clean, flat surface, then wipe the exterior with a soft, clean cloth. Sony advises against bleach and chemically treated cloths, while alcohol can discolor the console or degrade its ABS, polycarbonate and PC-ABS materials.
Pay particular attention to the external vents. Dust can be removed with a small handheld vacuum, or with compressed air used alongside a vacuum. Industrial-strength vacuums should be avoided. A cotton swab can collect dust left behind, while a soft brush, such as an old toothbrush, may help loosen dirt that has built up on the surface.
If exterior cleaning is not enough, the PS5’s covers can be removed to access trapped dust. The procedure differs between the original PS5 and the Slim or Pro models, and the covers should be handled carefully because they are relatively delicate. Once removed, use the same soft cloth and handheld vacuum to clean accessible areas without disconnecting the fan or removing internal screws.
When using canned air, prevent the fan from spinning. Blocking the fan blades with a cotton swab before directing air toward them can help avoid generating an electrical charge that could damage the console. Sony also designed triangular “dust catcher” areas inside the system to collect debris and make it easier to remove.
Opening the console further carries additional risks. Sony’s warranty excludes damage caused by unauthorized opening or internal work, and removing the fan requires a TR8 Torx Security screwdriver. For that reason, cleaning beyond the removable covers should be undertaken only with caution.
After cleaning, reinstall the covers carefully and reconnect the stand before plugging the console back in. Incorrectly aligned covers can affect airflow and potentially shorten the system’s lifespan.
Placement also affects dust and ventilation. The PS5 can be used vertically or horizontally, but the stand should be used in either position. The original model includes an adjustable base, while the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro include horizontal stands; vertical stands for those models are sold separately for $30.
Sony recommends leaving at least four inches of space between the console and nearby walls, with nothing directly above it when possible. Avoid enclosed spaces such as the inside of an entertainment center, and clean the area around the PS5 regularly to reduce the amount of dust that reaches the system.
