Lionsgate has officially given the green light to a live-action adaptation of the iconic anime series Naruto, marking the culmination of over ten years of development. Announced on November 3, 2026, the project represents a major partnership between Lionsgate and Sony Pictures. While Lionsgate will retain production duties and handle distribution in the United States and Canada, Sony Pictures is set to co-finance the film and manage its release outside of North America, including in France.
The studio has entrusted the project to Destin Daniel Cretton, a director known for his work on Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Following the global success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which earned approximately $2.52 billion worldwide since its release in late July, Cretton will serve as the writer, director, and producer of the Naruto film through his company Hisako. He will be joined by Arad Productions, led by Avi and Ari Arad. This appointment aligns with Sony's recent three-year deal with Cretton and leverages the studio's ownership of Crunchyroll, a leading anime streaming platform.
The source material boasts a massive global footprint, with Masashi Kishimoto's manga selling over 250 million copies and its anime adaptation airing in more than 145 countries and territories. In the official announcement, Cretton expressed his enthusiasm as a long-time fan, noting that he was drawn to the series' blend of extraordinary action with a story rich in heart, humor, and humanity. He praised Kishimoto for creating a world where unlikely heroes achieve extraordinary feats.
Regarding casting, Lionsgate has not yet confirmed who will portray the titular blond ninja who houses the nine-tailed demon fox. However, a global search for the roles of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura was launched in July. Currently, Charles Melton is rumored to be in advanced discussions since August to play Kakashi Hatake, the mentor of Team 7. Filming is scheduled to commence in spring 2027, though Lionsgate and Sony have not yet announced a release date.
