Netflix is testing an AI-powered recommendation feature for its TV app called AI Discover, designed to help viewers find something to watch without scrolling through the service’s catalogue. The company describes it as a testing ground for features that could eventually become part of the main Netflix experience.
If the feature is available on an account, a Discover tab marked with a red gem will appear in the app’s top navigation bar. The initial version presents themes paired with relevant clips from shows and movies. Suggestions may reflect who is watching, a viewer’s mood, the time available, new or popular titles, or recent viewing activity.
Viewers can choose a theme and then narrow the suggestions with more specific options. They can also refresh the set of themes, ask Netflix not to recommend a particular title again, and add titles to their list.
Netflix says AI helps generate the themes and that its underlying system responds to members’ input in real time and continues learning. The feature is initially available in English on supported TVs in the US, with a wider rollout planned over the coming weeks. AI Discover will not appear on kids profiles, according to Variety.
