Nintendo has confirmed that EPD Production Group No. 3 is developing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2. The studio also worked on Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The details appeared in the company’s Ask the Developer Vol. 24 interview, published on Monday, Nov. 2.
HokWai Ng will direct the remake, marking his first time leading a project at Nintendo. He has been with the company for 20 years and contributed to the game design of Tears of the Kingdom. Earlier speculation had pointed to Monolith Soft or Grezzo as the developer, but Nintendo’s disclosure rules out those claims.
Eiji Aonuma is producing the game alongside Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who directed Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Aya Shida is handling art direction; her credits include Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Tears of the Kingdom. Hiroki Taguchi is responsible for programming, while Masato Ohashi is composing the music.
Aonuma said the remake was intended both to mark The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary and to give newer developers experience working on the series. He noted that many team members had only worked on more recent games. The younger developers were given room to change elements of the 1998 original, though Aonuma said he was surprised by how little they altered.
The team also helped adjust the gameplay’s feel and pacing for modern players, Aonuma told AFP. The remake is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on Nov. 5.
