OpenAI has launched a $1 million fund to support ideas and proposals for regulating artificial intelligence. The company, which developed ChatGPT, will award ten grants of $100,000 each to individual researchers, organizations and companies selected through an internal review process.

Applicants were invited to submit proposals by June 24, 2023. OpenAI said it would publish a report explaining how the projects were chosen, with the aim of making the selection process transparent.

The program is intended to explore ways to decide democratically what rules AI systems should follow. OpenAI encouraged applicants to build on established methods or propose new approaches. Grant recipients are expected to develop a prototype involving at least 500 participants and publish a report by October 20, 2023.

The announcement came as the European Union was working on the AI Act, a proposed set of rules for AI applications. The source report said OpenAI had recently raised the possibility of withdrawing ChatGPT and its other projects from EU users if it could not meet demands for access to data and information described in a draft being considered by lawmakers.
