OpenAI is preparing to unify the “Chat” and “Work” tabs in ChatGPT. The change will let users access standard conversations and the Work AI agent from the same prompt box, eliminating the need to switch modes from the home screen.

The company has started notifying subscribers to ChatGPT’s paid plans about the update. It will be tested with a limited number of accounts in the coming weeks. The separate tabs are currently available on the web version and in ChatGPT’s desktop and mobile apps.

According to OpenAI, the change is intended to simplify workflows. Users will be able to discuss a task in the regular chat and then hand it over to the Work agent without changing sections. The company said the update is designed to support the process from exploring an idea to carrying it out in the same place.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July as an autonomous agent for carrying out different tasks. It can access documents on a computer and combine actions across apps, while users delegate the work, follow its progress and retain the option to intervene during the process.

The Codex programming assistant will continue to operate separately. However, it will share token usage with ChatGPT, meaning prompts submitted in the regular chat and in the coding agent will count against the same usage limits.

OpenAI said the adjustment should not affect most users, although a smaller group may need to monitor their AI consumption more closely.
