Reddit is testing advertisements in its search results, expanding the areas of its platform where users may encounter sponsored content. The company says the ads will be selected using several factors, including how relevant they are to a search query.
For example, a search for an “espresso station” could bring up ads for espresso machines, coffee beans or mugs. Searching for a “home office setup” might surface promotions for monitors, desks or office chairs.
Reddit already displays ads in feeds and discussion threads, using formats such as images, videos, sponsored posts and AMAs. The search advertising test is initially limited to a select group of advertisers, the company says.
