OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has clarified his comments about people using the world’s limited supply of DRAM in personal computers. On X, he said he wants memory to be widely available and people to be able to put as much as they want in their computers. He also argued that his earlier remarks had been taken out of context and said he had long supported increasing memory production.
Altman changed his display name on X to “RAM Altman” in response to another user’s comment. In a post, he wrote that he wanted people to “have so much ram.”
The remarks followed an appearance on the Cheeky Pint podcast, where Altman criticized the practice of keeping large amounts of the world’s limited DRAM supply in personal computers when it is used only a small fraction of the time.
The source report says AI data centers have been buying up memory, contributing to shortages that have pushed up technology prices. It also notes that Intel expects the shortage to continue through at least next year, while SK Hynix has forecast that it could last until 2030.
