Sony Pictures Entertainment has officially acquired the rights to adapt the viral indie horror game Mouthwashing for the big screen. According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the studio purchased the intellectual property from developer Wrong Organ to bring the title's narrative to a cinematic audience.

Karyn Kusama, known for directing films such as Jennifer's Body and The Invitation, has been attached to direct the project. The screenplay will be written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, the duo responsible for scripting The Invitation. Additionally, Scott Derrickson, the director behind The Black Phone and Sinister, is set to produce the film.

Industry observers suggest that Sony aims to replicate the success of its previous horror video game adaptation, Resident Evil. That project, directed by Zach Cregger, achieved both critical acclaim and financial viability. However, unlike the more comedic tone of Resident Evil, Mouthwashing offers a grounded experience centered on a stranded spaceship crew slowly losing their grip on reality. The game is noted for its heavy themes and surreal imagery rather than relying heavily on jump scares.

While no release date has been announced for the film adaptation, the source material remains widely accessible to audiences. Originally launched on PC in 2024, Mouthwashing is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and through Xbox Game Pass.
