SpaceX is partnering with Qualcomm to build out Starlink Mobile’s nationwide 5G network. The multi-year agreement will see SpaceX use Qualcomm’s Dragonwing cellular infrastructure at tens of thousands of cell sites across the United States, with the first deployments planned for 2027.
Dragonwing combines hardware and software designed to improve network coverage, capacity and efficiency. SpaceX plans to pair the system with its constellation of direct-to-cell satellites.
The partnership is part of SpaceX’s effort to make Starlink Mobile a major US carrier and compete with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. The company has acquired spectrum, and recent reports have said it was exploring a possible acquisition of Boost Mobile.
Qualcomm executive vice president Durga Malladi described the agreement as an opportunity to advance 5G infrastructure in the US and lay groundwork for 6G in the coming years.
