Stephen King’s 1979 novel The Dead Zone inspired a television series that ran for six seasons on USA Network. Starring Anthony Michael Hall, The Dead Zone combines supernatural elements with crime-solving, but has drawn less attention than some of the author’s other screen adaptations.
Hall plays Johnny Smith, a small-town teacher who wakes after spending six years in a coma following a car accident. He finds that his life has changed: his fiancée has married local sheriff Walt Bannerman, played by Chris Bruno, and his teaching career is over.
Johnny also discovers that touch can trigger visions of the past and present, as well as glimpses of what may happen in the future. With support from his friend Bruce Lewis, played by John L. Adams, and Sheriff Bannerman, he helps local authorities investigate crimes and try to prevent tragedies.
The series develops Johnny’s ability over time, offering more scientific explanations for his clairvoyance as the story expands from local cases to a larger threat involving an apocalypse. The Dead Zone is available to stream on Mercado Play.
