Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ) has arrested two men suspected of involvement in a scheme to steal and resell vehicles. The investigation covers suspected vehicle theft, handling stolen goods, document forgery, fraud, and the vehicles’ legalization and sale.

According to the PJ, most of the vehicles were light commercial models stolen in northern Portugal. They were taken to warehouses, where their physical features and paperwork were altered. Investigators say the changes allowed the vehicles to circulate with number plates and documents belonging to other, similar vehicles.

After being altered and apparently legalized, the vehicles were transported to countries in northern Europe and offered for sale. The investigation indicates that many were ultimately destined for African countries, where demand for this type of commercial vehicle is high.

The suspects were arrested outside the act of committing a crime and are presumed to have carried out the offences under investigation. The PJ’s Northern Directorate continues its inquiries to clarify the circumstances of the alleged operation.
