Prime Video has renewed Carrie, the Stranger for a second season after the modern adaptation of Stephen King’s classic drew attention from horror audiences. Developed by Mike Flanagan, the series places Carrie in the present day and examines adolescence, isolation, the loss of innocence, social media and complicated family relationships.

Summer H. Howell plays the title character, presenting a more empathetic version of the vengeful teenager from the original story. Although the series received criticism for leaning more toward adolescent drama than traditional horror, its first season built an audience and introduced several mysteries beyond King’s book.

The eight-episode debut season adapts the novel while substantially changing its conclusion. Carrie survives the prom massacre, creating room for a continuation that is not directly based on the source material. Flanagan has envisioned the story as a three-season arc, and the renewal is expected to give the production greater creative freedom.

The second season could follow Carrie after her escape from her hometown, potentially alongside Emaline, played by Thalia Dudek. The story may also reveal more about the mysterious group of people with psychic abilities similar to Carrie’s. Her journey away from home is expected to expand the series’ mythology while exploring what happens after the events of the prom.

Flanagan has confirmed that the series is connected to Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. In an interview with TV Insider, the director said the show was created with the connections between King’s fictional worlds in mind and that Carrie’s place in that mythology is suggested in the original novel.

Because of that connection, the second season may include references to other works by King, including The Shining and Doctor Sleep. The series could also develop the idea that Carrie’s supernatural abilities come from the same source as Danny Torrance’s powers. More direct references to The Dark Tower, including the Breakers and their connection to the Crimson King, are also possible.

The new episodes may additionally focus on the consequences of the school tragedy. With Carrie on the road, Sue Snell, played by Siena Agudong, could help explore the investigation, the emotional impact on survivors and the effect of the massacre on the wider community. The story may also examine how Carrie changes after gaining the freedom to decide who she wants to be.

Prime Video has not announced a premiere date for the second season.
