Xiaomi has launched the smart lock 5, a new intelligent locking system designed to streamline residential access. The device features fingerprint recognition, smartphone connectivity, and is powered by eight AA batteries that promise up to one year of autonomy. The lock operates on a push-pull mechanism, allowing users to unlock the door simply by touching the integrated reader on the handle. According to the manufacturer, fingerprint recognition takes as little as 0.7 seconds, and the lock automatically re-engages once the door is closed.
For users who prefer not to use biometrics, the Smart Lock 5 supports a fixed or virtual password, single-use codes, NFC cards, Bluetooth, and a mechanical key. These alternatives facilitate sharing access with family members and visitors without the need for physical key copies. In terms of connectivity, the device connects via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3. The Xiaomi Home app allows users to check the lock's status remotely, while the system sends alerts regarding break-in attempts, multiple incorrect password entries, or if the door is left ajar. Additionally, it includes a duress fingerprint feature that can trigger an alert if a user is forced to unlock the door.
Regarding power management, the eight AA batteries provide up to 12 months of usage. If the charge runs low, an emergency button allows activation before entering a fingerprint or password. Should the batteries completely deplete, an external power source can be connected via the USB-C port located at the bottom of the device to unlock the door. The manufacturer also highlights a Class C security cylinder and quieter operation, noting that the locking process generates 12 dB less noise and unlocking is 13 dB quieter compared to the first generation.
Pre-sales for the Smart Lock 5 in China begin on November 4 at a price of 1,176 yuan, which translates to approximately R$ 964 based on current exchange rates. There is currently no information regarding global availability.
