Google began rolling out an update to Play services on November 2, bringing new features for device connections, account management and security. Because Play services updates are delivered directly by Google, they do not depend on device manufacturers. The changes are available to most Android devices with Play services, including phones, tablets, smartwatches, TVs, vehicles with Android Auto and Chromebooks.

Version 26.43 of Google Play services lets Windows users automatically back up photos and videos using Quick Share, Google’s wireless file-sharing feature. Google’s release notes do not explain exactly how the backup works, but say the update uses improved protocols for connecting devices.

The update also makes family account controls easier to find. A new “Family” section appears under Google settings, with an overview of family members, any Google One subscription and its storage usage, and shared services.

Google has added an option to its Password Manager for choosing which credentials to keep when importing data that contains conflicting passwords or passkeys. The update also refreshes system management services, which Google says is intended to improve battery life, connectivity, performance, privacy, security, stability and updateability.

Other changes include support for location- and context-based features in Google and third-party apps, fixes to security and emergency services, and updated customer cards in Google Wallet. Google typically rolls out these updates gradually.
