Code discovered in HomeView 27.2 suggests Apple may be considering security camera capabilities for its smart home hub. The findings were reported by Reddit user pdfu, who identified strings describing a dedicated security camera mode.
The referenced features include motion detection, live video streaming and recording, along with privacy controls. One setup screen reportedly states that HomeView can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video.
According to the reported code, video feeds would be limited to members of the home. The device would also show an indicator light and play a sound when someone views the camera feed or when recording begins. Home members could receive notifications whenever settings for the Secure Video mode are changed.
The software strings also point to customizable detection, streaming and recording behavior depending on whether users are home, away or asleep.
Apple has not announced these capabilities or confirmed that they are planned for release. The company also has not explained why HomeView did not include a security camera mode at launch. The features may therefore still be under development and could change before any potential rollout.
