Finding a comfortable fit with AirPods can be difficult for people with small ears, particularly with models that have no interchangeable ear tips. A secure fit can improve music playback, bass and noise cancellation, while reducing the chance of earbuds slipping out during exercise.
For AirPods without ear tips, Apple’s adjustment options are limited: push the earbuds into your ears and rotate the stems toward your face until they sit securely. If that does not provide a stable fit, third-party hooks from brands such as KeyBudz and AhaStyle loop around the ear to hold the earbuds in place. The source says these accessories typically cost between $10 and $15. AirPods Pro are another option for those who need a closer fit.
AirPods Pro come with interchangeable tips in several sizes, depending on the generation. The first generation includes small, medium and large tips; the second adds an extra-small size; and the third includes sizes from XXS to large. The medium tips are fitted by default, but trying different sizes may help. It is also possible to use a different size in each ear.
To change a tip, pull it away from its connector until it comes off, then align a replacement with the oval base and push it into place until it clicks. Users can assess the fit by listening to bass-heavy music or running Apple’s seal check. On AirPods Pro, the Acoustic Seal Test or Ear Tip Fit Test is available through Settings under the AirPods menu. The test plays audio and reports whether the seal is good or whether another size should be tried.
Some users may prefer foam tips to silicone. Foam is compressed before insertion and expands in the ear canal, creating a snug seal that can be more comfortable for some people. The trade-off is that foam tips need to be replaced more often. Third-party options from Comply and Foam Masters are listed at $25 to $30 per set. Buyers should check compatibility: AirPods Pro 3 use a redesigned tip connector.
