Johnny Depp has indicated he could return as Captain Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, provided it gives the franchise a better send-off. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while promoting Ebenezer, the actor said his main wish was to offer the series “a better exit.”

Depp also pointed to his close friendship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all five previous films. He said he would be willing to work with Bruckheimer again, while making clear that any return would depend on the project being in the right place.

The actor’s comments mark a change from his account during his 2022 trial against Amber Heard. At the time, he said Disney had shelved a planned sixth film with him, a decision he had taken as a betrayal. The five movies have earned a combined $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office, according to the source report.

Bruckheimer is still working on the screenplay with Jeff Nathanson, who wrote Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge. The producer has described the script’s third act as strong, but said its first two acts still needed revision. He has also advocated for Depp’s return, even as he describes Nathanson’s film as a fresh start for the series.

Disney has not announced a release date or cast for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Bruckheimer said in February 2026 that the screenplay was not yet finished, and that Top Gun 3 was slightly further along. A separate Pirates project associated with Margot Robbie has also been discussed, though its status remains uncertain.

Depp’s remarks come as he returns to major studio films. He stars in Ebenezer, a Paramount adaptation of the Dickens story directed by Ti West, and is set to appear in Lionsgate thriller Day Drinker, expected in March 2027.
