Unlike iPhone software, AirPods firmware has no dedicated update screen or button. Apple delivers updates automatically in the background, and they can bring new features, reliability improvements and bug fixes. The process is not entirely hands-off, though: a few checks can help your AirPods get an available update.

First, make sure your iPhone, iPad or Mac is running the latest software. On an iPhone or iPad, connect your AirPods and open Settings. Select the AirPods menu near the top, then scroll to the About section and check Version. On a Mac, open System Settings, choose Bluetooth, find your AirPods and click the information button. Compare the version shown with the latest release listed on Apple’s AirPods firmware page.

Apple does not provide a way to force an update. To prepare your AirPods, pair them with an iPhone, iPad or Mac, ensure Bluetooth is on and connect that device to Wi-Fi. Then place the earbuds in their charging case, close the lid and connect the case to power. Keep the AirPods near the connected device and wait about 30 minutes before reconnecting them and checking the firmware version again.

The same general process applies to AirPods Max: place them in their case and connect them to a charger. If you use AirPods without an Apple device, Apple says an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider can update the firmware.

Firmware updates can introduce features, although availability depends on the AirPods model. They can also address bugs and connection problems, making it useful to keep the earbuds up to date.
