Stellantis’ factory in Mangualde, in Portugal’s Viseu district, produces 372 vehicles a day with a workforce of about 900. Around 95% of its output is destined for international markets, while the plant accounts for 27% of Portugal’s vehicle production, according to figures presented recently.
Portuguese suppliers provide 30% of the automotive parts used at the facility. Mangualde builds vehicles for Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Fiat, including the Partner and Rifter, Berlingo, Combo and Doblò ranges. Its production includes commercial and passenger versions with combustion engines and fully electric powertrains for European markets.
The factory’s history began in 1962, when it operated as Citroën Lusitânia. Production started two years later with the Citroën 2CV. On July 27, 1990, the plant produced the last Citroën 2CV in the world. It reached a total of two million vehicles on September 2, 2026, marked by the production of an electric Citroën ë-Berlingo Van for a customer in Portugal’s Leiria region.
Mangualde began large-scale production of fully electric passenger and light commercial vehicles in October 2024, becoming Portugal’s first industrial plant to do so. The change involved an investment of €119 million through the GreenAuto initiative, as well as the installation of a battery assembly line and specialist training for workers. The factory also has a CustomFit Center for vehicle conversions and customisation.
Stellantis Pro One’s new Smart Compact Van range is also being produced at Mangualde. The vans are due to begin deliveries later this month after a European tour.
