Microsoft is testing two controller options for Xbox Cloud gaming. Players using the service on select smart TVs can use a phone as a controller, while users in the United States can connect the new Nano Controller directly to the service over Wi-Fi.
The phone-control option opens in a browser, so it does not require a dedicated app download. Some games include custom controller layouts, Microsoft said. To enable the feature on a supported TV, users can open Settings > Account in the Cloud Gaming interface and turn on Preview Features. The company said the option is available starting today on select TVs.
Using a phone may be better suited to turn-based games than titles that demand quick inputs or complex controls. Other game-streaming services, including Netflix, also offer phone controls.
The Nano Controller’s Wi-Fi connection is intended to help reduce latency. Users first need to set up the controller through the Xbox beta app on Android or the Xbox Accessories app on PC, then follow the instructions to connect it to Wi-Fi. Those using the PC app must be enrolled in the Xbox Insider testing program to try the feature. The controller connects when players access Xbox Cloud Gaming with the same account used during setup.
Microsoft said both options are in preview, and availability, supported devices and games may be limited. For now, Nano Controller Wi-Fi connectivity works only on smart TVs and the web. The approach recalls Google Stadia’s controller, which also connected to games over Wi-Fi.
