Canva is restructuring its workforce, with changes affecting 1,271 employees—22 percent of its staff—according to co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins. Some employees will move into different roles or be asked to relocate, while others will leave the company, she said in a note to staff.
Perkins said Canva had considered a range of alternatives but concluded that smaller changes would not be enough. The company plans to return to smaller, more autonomous teams, with a focus on decision-making and priorities for its community.
As part of the restructuring, Canva will combine its Product, Growth and Platform teams into a single product organization, simplify management layers and consolidate overlapping responsibilities. Sydney will become the main base for more product teams and for some other roles that require close collaboration, Perkins said.
From January, most employees on hybrid arrangements will be expected to work from an office two to three days a week, depending on what is appropriate for their area. Employees leaving Canva will receive at least six months of salary, 12 months of healthcare coverage and career support resources.
