Online B2C purchases in Italy are expected to rise by 13% in 2023 and reach €54 billion, according to the Digital Sustainability Foundation’s 2023 e-commerce report. Online sales are forecast to account for 12% of all retail purchases, unchanged from 2022.
The report found that 63% of those surveyed use e-commerce websites or apps. Of the full sample, 41% said they use them regularly.
Respondents in Italy’s metropolitan cities expressed mixed views about the impact of online commerce on small businesses. Some 73% believe e-commerce will lead to the destruction of small shops. Yet 72% said it could represent an opportunity for smaller businesses that adapt.
The foundation said these views are not necessarily incompatible: respondents who expect e-commerce to threaten small shops may also see opportunities for those able to adjust.
